Description:

FERDINAND VON SAMMERN-FRANKENEGG (1897 – 1944) German SS functionary, in charge of the 'Grossaktion Warschau', the single most deadly operation against the Jews in the course of the Holocaust in occupied Poland, which entailed sending over 250,000 men, women and children aboard overcrowded trains to the extermination camp in Treblinka. He would be killed by partisans in Croatia. Interesting typed D.S. on 'Das Reichsfuhrer-SS' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, May 7, 1943. The letter, sent to Sammern-Frankenegg, is signed by a comparatively lowly SS official whose rank is not even indicated, reads simply: 'I hereby authorize you to where the shoulder boards of a police colonel.' Folds and file holes, else very good. The reason for such lack of respect? On April 19th, Sammern-Frankenegg failed in an attempt to put down the Warsaw Uprising and was court martialed by Himmler six days later - two weeks before he would be sent this letter in anticipation of being sent off to the front.
