Description:

(WAR OF 1812) ESTABLISHMENT OF H.Q., U.S. ARMY NORTHERN DIVISION
Good content A.L.S. by one "J.W. Rockwell", 2pp. folio, Greenbush, May 19, 1812 discussing the construction of a barracks and arsenal. In part: "...I take this opportunity to inform you that the Schermerhorn farm has been is or is about being sold either to the United States or this State...for permanent encampment for about six thousand men. I understand they will commence building a magazine an Arsenal Barracks immediately. I also understand that the people that live on the farm have been ejected off of it..." Large chip in blank margin, else very good. East Greenbush was a 400-acre post that was the headquarters of the Northern Division of the U.S. Army. Built here were eight two-story barracks, three officers'' quarters, a hospital, two commissaries, arsenal, armory, guardhouses, magazine, and stables around a parade ground. Inactivated and then sold in 1831.
