WALTER STEWART
(1756 - 1796) Continental Army officer and an aide to Gates, he won distinction for holding the line at Brandywine, and fought at Germantown and Monmouth where Washington ordered him to cover the retreat. Manuscript D.S. as Customs Inspector at Philadelphia, 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, July, 1794, his invoice to the federal government for "marking 1282 bark cases". Small marginal tape stains and a collector's catalog label pasted at bottom, else boldly signed and very good. Rare, as ABPC indicates only one document offered in the past twenty years.
