Description:

(1880 - 1949) American general responsible for the air and ground defense of Pearl Harbor. After the Japanese attack, Short and Adm. Husband E. Kimmel were relieved of command and blamed for the debacle. However, an inquiry surmised that officials in both Washington and Hawaii were derelict. Very rare I.S.P. 'Walter C. Short Lieut. General U.S.A.', an 8 x 10 in. b/w chest, up portrait with Short proudly displaying the lieutenant general's stars on his left shoulder, inscribed to 'Ruth and Tom' on the 11 x 15 in. mat, set into a period black wood frame. Fine. Short did not wear these stars for long. General George Marshall appointed him to the Hawaiian command on February 8, 1941, at the same time promoting him to lieutenant general. On December 17, 1941, Short was removed from command and ordered back to Washington, D.C. by Marshall. In disgrace, he was reduced in rank to major general. He requested, but did not receive, a formal court-martial.
