VERY EARLY REPORT OF A FREDERICK DOUGLASS ANTI-SLAVERY LECTURE
"THE SPEECH OF DOUGLASS IS...MASTERFUL" A very early newspaper notice of an anti-slavery speech given by ex-slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, as reported in "Niles'' National Register", Baltimore, June 3, 1843, 16pp. , 9" x 16". An article on the fifth page reports on proceedings of the American Anti-Slavery Society at their annual meeting. It mentions that "eight or ten lecturing agents are constantly employed" and that 200,000 people had attended meetings and lectures. It continues: "The most remarkable occurrence in the meeting was a speech by a fugitive slave, Fred. Douglass, who told the meeting...that the slaves of the south were taught to know that movements touching the abolition of slavery were going on at the north, mainly by the fury and denunciations of their masters. Abolitionism...has its most potent auxiliaries in the violence, vindictiveness, and menaces of southern masters. The speech of Douglass...is moderate and masterful..." Some foxed spots scattered about, otherwise very good. This would have been one of Douglass'' first speeches in the U.S. following his return from the U.K. and his purchase of his freedom. In this same year, he was the only black to attend the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women''s rights convention, in upstate New York. Interestingly, this newspaper was published in Baltimore ... the city from which Douglass has escaped slavery ten years earlier.
