UNION SOLDIER WRITES ABOUT BURNING HOUSES IN WINCHESTER
War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Winchester, June 7, 1862, in pencil from John S. Sargent, a soldier on Battery L of the 1st New York Light Artillery. In part: ‘…Monday afternoon we were ordered to start for Winchester as the Rebels had retreated from Harpers Ferry...we hear the General Fremont is following...we are taking Rebel prisoners every day and they look pretty hard...they say they do not care which way it goes...General Banks is right behind us a mile or two...They had to have a strong guard over Winchester last night as Bank's men swore they would burn every house in it for shooting at them when they went through a week ago…' This may be referring to the Union loss at the First Battle of Winchester, where ‘Stonewall' Jackson rousingly defeated Banks and saw the disruption of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. Lightly stained, otherwise very good. With the original transmittal cover.
