Description:

UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER FROM PETERSBURG
A nice A.L.S. of WILSON SPROUL, who, on Oct. 2, 1861 at the age of 19, mustered into Co. C of the 87th New York Infantry. He was transferred on Sept. 6, 1862 to Co. C Mozart Regiment of the 40th N.Y. Infantry. Wounded at Gettysburg, he survived the war and mustered out on Oct. 6, 1864. Written to his father, the letter is 2pp. 8vo., "Camp near Petersburg", Sept. 27, 1864, in part: "...I now take my pen in hand to answer you...I am sorry to hear that Oliver was Drafted, but still he may get clear...this winder is going to end this cruel war for it is fast going down the pickets in our front still, keep up their firing so it stops the rebs from coming in to our lines as much as they would if the firing was stopped but there was two come in last night, and they say that they are hard up at Petersburgh and that he only had one meal all day, and is removed that they are aEvacuating this place. But I can't say how extreme it is. But every thing is very quiet over there and no one, astirring around as we can see. We had heard of the fight down in the Valley and of the second victory there of our army. The rebs is quite down about Something and is pretty well discouraged. The Officers is regular tyrants and can't trust the men any were and the men can't trust one another so they must be a fine lot of soldiers. There is nothing more of much importance that I can write...Don't suffer that I will receive any answer to this. As it is getting near time that I shall be on the road for home. If I am not detained with my papers I will be home by the seventh or eighth of next month...". Signed with his rank: "C. D. 40th Batt. N.Y.V. 3rd Div 2nd Corps Washington, D. C.". Light toning, very good.
