UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER
Fine content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., Hardin Co., Ky., May 1, 1863, in which Pvt. Erastus Winters of the 50th Ohio, later to be a prisoner at Cahawba and a survivor of the Sultana disaster, describes his recent combat experiences. In part: "...I have but to point to the bloody field of Perryville to prove that there was a hand shielding me from the deadly missiles flying thick and fast...Vallandingham is sentenced for two years on the Tortugas by General Burnside, it was time the old traitor was put somewhere for safe keeping...three men went out this morning and brought in three prisoners...what will be done with them I don't know, they say that one of them shot at one of our men...one of them is a contraband, he is about six feet high, they call him lightning rod...". He concludes his letter with a patriotic poem. Moderate soiling, else good.
