UNION OFFICER KILLED IN ACTION AT GETTYSBURG
ELIAKIN SHERRILL (d. 1863), Union colonel who, according to Civil War database records, enlisted on Aug. 20, 1862 at Centreville, Va. and commissioned into Field & Staff of the N.Y. 126th Infy. less than one month later. Killed in action at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. Very rare partly-printed war-date D.S. 1p. folio, Geneva, [N.Y.?], Aug. 16, 1862 an appointment of Charles C. Wright as Corporal in Company H of the 126th Regiment in the N.Y. Vols. Of course, Sherrill is not recorded as having enlisted until four days after this document was signed, suggesting that his enlistment date was Aug. 16th, and he set to work immediately. Folds, else very good.
