(UNION NAVY) USS MONTGOMERY ENSIGN ROBERT M. WILEY, K.I.A. AT FORT FISHER
ROBERT M. WILEY (?-1865) U.S. Navy ensign, served aboard the screw steamer USS MONTGOMERY, chosen as prize captain of the captured blockade runner BAT, taken by Montgomery off Wilmington on Oct. 11, 1864. Wiley was killed in action on Jan. 15, 1865, during Admiral David D. Porter's capture of Fort Fisher on the approaches to Wilmington, which closed the last Confederate port on the Atlantic coast. A scarce pair of partly-printed D.S.'s, each 1p. oblong 12mo.., each a paycheck issued to Wiley by U.S. Navy purser Edward T. Dunn at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the first dated Dec. 1, 1849, and the second Feb. 1, 1850. Wiley signs both checks as received in black ink at lower right. Both are very faintly toned, but otherwise in fine condition. Two pieces.
