UNION ARTILLERYMAN VIEWS CARNAGE NEAR CHATTANOOGA
Fine content A.L.S. of a Union artillryman "Charles", 3pp. 8vo., Chattanooga, Oct. 7, 1863 describing the carnage he viewed while fighting with the 20th Indep. Battery, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery ("Smithnight's Battery"). He writes, in part: "...we lost two of our guns...broke by the heavy firing and were left on the field. Moats had his piece disabled but brought it off the field...Hudson was slightly wounded in the forepart of the engagement but did not leave the field & was struck with a piece of shell which broke his leg. He was left in the hands of the rebels they cut off his leg which caused his death. Patton has his hands blown off by a premature discharge of his gun. he was taken to the hospital where he died, soon after we had nine wounded 2 of which have died...it was a hard fight Stone River was nothing to it the first day we drove the rebs 3 miles but during the night they were heavily reinforced the next day they regained the ground...we fell back to a position on a ridge...here was the hardest fighting of the battle we held our ground until night when we fell back to this place...the rebels are all along the front...they commenced shelling our camp and kept it up all day...". On the verso he sourly notes: "Smithnight's Battery Skedaddled from the fight...". Very good.
