(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Fine association D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, June 12, 1874, the appointment of WINFIELD SCOTT SCHLEY to serve as 'Commander in the Navy'. Co-signed by Secretary of the Navy GEORGE M. ROBESON (1829-1897). Grant's signature just a tad light, possibly trimmed slightly at left and right with a small loss at left margin, folds, else near fine. WINFIELD S. SCHLEY 1839-1911) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and the hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Commanding the armored cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn during the battle, his quick thinking resulted in the complete destruction of the Spanish fleet, ensured the independence of Cuba from Spanish rule, and bringing the Spanish-American War to a quick close. At about the time he received this appointment, Schley was assigned to the Asiatic Station, and served there on the screw sloop Benicia until 1872 and was adjutant of the land forces during the attack by Rear Admiral John Rodgers's expedition on the Korean forts on Ganghwa Island on 10 June and 11 June 1871. He then participated in the following Battle of Gangwha which caused the destruction of the Korean fortifications, a fairly unknown early American intervention on the Korean peninsula.
