Lot 257
carte de visite, lithographs, and so on chronicling the life of Grant from his earliest days in the Civil War, through his post-war and presidential years, concluding with the last photograph of him seated on his porch three days before his death. All in all there are 36 cartes de visite, three folio-sized images, one stereoscopic card, one 5" x 7" contact print, two cabinet photographs, an engraving and two quarto-sized images. Among the highlights of the collection is a contact print from the Brady negative showing Grant outside his tent and leaning against a tree, Grant and his family seated in the White House, a 10 1/2" x 17" mounted albumen showing Grant seated, a large retouched image of Grant and his staff, and carte de visite photographs with some rare views, most with recognizable backstamps. This superlative collection is in overall very good condition, and definitely should be viewed to be fully appreciated.
