Description:

Great lot of nearly 100 original photographs taken by a U.S. serviceman during the American occupation of Haiti, ca. 1930, most are 5.25 x 3.25 in. b/w and annotated on the verso. The lot includes many routine examples, yet includes some excellent aerial views of the Haitian landscape and American encampments, photographs of early biplanes, and much more. Just a sampling of the notable images include: a photograph of a pufferfish, annotated on the verso: '...caught when the went fishing with bombs the last time...' (!); an image of a chloroformed tarantula; an image of a rubble-filled street with ladies carrying food and water on their heads, annotated on the verso 'St. Do[minique]'; an image of a wooden pole stuck through a tree from a hurricane; an image of a funeral of a Marine, whose body is being sent back to the U.S.; an image of a Haitian funeral, annotated on the verso: '...I don't very well tell you what they do and say after they reach the graveyard...'; and many more images of American biplanes. The images were previously removed from a photo album, thus some corners bear mounting remnants on the corners or verso, and others are clipped at the corners entirely. Overall fine condition.

Shipping

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
