Description:

Good pair of original World War I-era recruiting posters, each soliciting volunteers for the U.S. Army's Motor Transport Corps, a division of the U.S. Quartermaster Corps formed in August of 1918 and tasked with the manufacturing, maintenance, and operation of the Army's supply vehicles. Includes: full-color poster, 19" x 25 1/2", advertising the "Motor Transport Corps Training School" with the slogan "Earn While You Learn" and a fine illustration of a column of M.T.C. supply trucks. The central image is flanked on both sides by depictions of mechanics, titled "Become and Expert Mechanic" and "Learn the Auto Trade". The printed signature of the artist, "Sgt. E.R. Euler, M.T.C." appears at lower right, with the date "1919". A publishing line at the bottom edge indicates that the poster was printed at the U.S. Army's Engineer Reproduction Plant at the Washington, D.C. barracks. Shows a 2" tear to the bottom edge with additional minor bumps, else very good. WITH: A second full-color poster, 19" x 25", illustrated with an image of a mechanic over a silhouette of a truck, with the M.T.C. insignia - a winged helmet - below and to the left. The poster exclaims: "The Motor Transport Corps Offers You and Opportunity to Become and Expert Auto Mechanic and Repairman". It continues: "Sign up now for a course of instruction in the Motor Transport Corps Training School", with the slogan "Earn While Your Learn". A box at bottom center allows the name of a local recruiter to be added (blank here), and a publishing line at the bottom edge indicates that the poster was printed at the U.S. Army's Engineer Reproduction Plant at the Washington, D.C. barracks in 1919. Shows a small area of paper loss to the top right corner, not affecting the printed area, with additional folds, chips and bumps overall, still very good. Two pieces. The Motor Transport Corps was dissolved in 1920 as a consequence of the overall demobilization of U.S. forces following the Armistice, and materials from its brief period of existence are scarce.
