Description:

Good pair of original World War I-era recruiting posters, each soliciting volunteers for the U.S. Army's Motor Transport Corps, a division of the U.S. Quartermaster Corps formed in August of 1918 and tasked with the manufacturing, maintenance, and operation of the Army's supply vehicles. Includes: full-color poster, 18 1/2" x 25", depicting two drivers in a supply truck calling out to a civilian with the slogan: "Say! Young Fellow. Do you want to be a Mechanic? The Motor Transport Corps Will Train You". The additional slogan "Earn While You Learn" appears at bottom left, while the insignia of the Corps - a winged helmet - is displayed at bottom right. At bottom center appears a box for the contact information of a local recruiter, blank on this example, and a publishing line at the bottom edge indicates that the poster was printed at the U.S. Army's Engineer Reproduction Plant at the Washington, D.C. barracks in 1919. Shows minor bumps to the corners and a minute chip to the left edge, else very good. WITH: a second M.T.C. poster, 19" x 25", printed in white on a violet background, again bearing the slogan "Earn While You Learn" over a photo of an M.T.C. mechanic. The poster goes on to list the wages available for machinists, blacksmiths, electricians, welders, drivers and more, and again offers training for these vocations. A publishing line at the bottom edge again indicates that it was printed at the Engineer Reproduction Plant in 1919. Shows folds, with minor bumps to the edges, else very good. Two pieces. The Motor Transport Corps was dissolved in 1920 as a consequence of the overall demobilization of U.S. forces following the Armistice, and materials from its brief period of existence are scarce.
