WILLIAM M. "BOSS" TWEED (1823 -1878) Mayor of New York and political boss. His construction of the New York Court House and the graft associated with it nearly bankrupted New York and led to his ultimate jailing. Scarce D.S. "W. M.Tweed" 1p. Oblong 8vo., New York, Sep. 28, 1863, a certificate signed by Tweed as a Supervisor of the New York County Substitute and Relief Committee, approving George Smith to serve in the Union Army as a substitute for laborer James Lee of 17 West Street. Attached also are certificates signed by Lee and Smith attesting to the fact that Lee's $300 bounty had been assigned to Smith. One letter in Tweed's signature slightly smudged, else fine. Rare in this form. $150-200
