CULLEN U. GULKO (1916 - 2005) American Brigadier General, highly involved with unit mobilization in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, serving as Troop Movement Officer and Deputy Base Port Commander in New Guinea, Port Operations Officer in New Guinea and Yokohama, and Superintendent, Water Division, in Otaru, Japan. Released from active duty just after war's end. His pair of uniforms, including his extremely rare US Army, 'Coat, Man's, Polyester/Wool, Tropical, AG-344, Class 3', with each upper collar lapel showing the usual metal 'US' pins, hollow backed and thus unmarked. Each shoulder epaulette has matching, hallmarked, clutch back, General's stars. Sewn on the upper right sleeve is a cloth US Eighth Army insignia patch, and sewn on the upper left sleeve is a cloth US Army Material Command insignia patch. Each lower sleeve has the proper mohair cloth rings of a General. A plastic name plate with 'Gulko' impressed on it is pinned on his right top pocket flap. The garment has two sets of award ribbons affixed, denoting the following awards/medals: the 'Legion of Merit Medal', the 'Bronze Star Medal', the 'Army Commendation Medal with 1 Bronze Star', the 'American Defense Service Medal', the 'American Campaign Medal', the 'Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars', the 'WWII Victory Medal', the 'Army Occupation of Japan Medal', the 'Armed Force Reserve Medal with 2 Hour Glasses', the 'Philippine Liberation Medal', the 'Philippine Independence Medal', the 'Presidential Unit Citation', the 'Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation (ribbon)', and the 'Basic Qualification Badge for Sharpshooter, 1st Class Gunner', for the carbine. The inside of the jacket is of the partial lining type, with a cloth size tag sewn at the neck area and a large printed 'US Army Uniform' tag sewn near one pocket. There are two matching sewn tags found on the inside of the inside pocket. One is a standard 'Union Made' tag, the other bears various manufacturing information and specifications. Sold with matching General's 'Trousers, Men's, Polyester Wool Tropical, AG-344, Type 1 Class 3', that are 1969 dated, as well General Gulko's named garrison cap. His name 'Col Gulko' has been hand-inked inside, and the braid is of the Colonel or less rank style. Gulka also glued a plastic name label to the inside lining, and pinned a General's star insignia pinned to the side curtain. To complete this uniform, our consigner has added a 1968 dated, 'Shirt, Man's, U.T. 8.2 Oz. Khaki, Quarter Sleeve', and a 1966 dated, 'Necktie, Wool, Tropical, Black'. WITH: his mid-1960's period, 'Shirt's, Man's, Cotton Santeen, OG-107', with standard issue 'US Army' cloth tape sewn on the left breast and his cloth name tape sewn to the right breast. The buttons are all present, are intact, and show proper attaching thread. There is a 311th Logistical Command insignia patch is sewn to the upper left sleeve, which matches Gulko's service history. The jacket has no factory tags or ink imprinting on the interior, and the upper collar lapels show no evidence of any rank insignia. This uniform includes his matching, heavily starched, utility trousers. They are also un-tagged or ink imprinted, yet bear a crudely hand inked 'Gulko' inked inside. This uniform includes his off-white (Navy?) shade belt and buckle, a ballpoint pen found in the General's pocket, two pages of biographical information, and copies of his service records. Each garment is in fine condition. From a major private collection on public display.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
