Description:

(TITANIC VICTIMS) ISADOR AND IDA STRAUS
(1845 - 1912) German-born American businessman and co-owner of Macy's department store with his brother Nathan. He also served briefly as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Rare, good content D.S. "Isidor Strauss", also signed by his wife IDA R. STRAUSS (1849-1912) who perished with him aboard the Titanic, and additionally signed by NATHAN STRAUSS (1848-1931) and his wife, LINA STRAUSS (1854-1930), 4pp. legal folio, New York, May 7, 1909, an indenture between the husbands and wives in which the former transfer a parcel of land along the Bronx River to the latter for the token sum of $1.00. Boldly signed by all four at conclusion. Very good. Although Isidor was offered a seat in a lifeboat to accompany Ida, he refused seating while there were still women and children aboard and refused to be made an exception. According to friend and Titanic survivor Col. Archibald Gracie IV, Ida refused to leave her husband and Isidor declined a seat, declaring: "I will not go before the other men". Ida gave her maid her fur coat stating she would not be needing it and declared: "I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die, together." Isidor and Ida were last seen on deck arm in arm.
