Description:

(TITANIC OFFICERS) "JUST AS THE SHIP WENT DOWN" SHEET MUSIC SIGNED BY TITANIC OFFICERS
A rare piece of Titanic-related sheet music signed by two officers who survived the disaster. The composition, "Just As the Ship Went Down", was written by Edith Lessing, with music by Bernie Adler and Sidney Gibson, published by Harold Rossiter Music Co., Chicago, 1912. The six page 10 1/2" x 13 3/4" music has been signed on the cover by its original owner, HAROLD LOWE (1882-1944). He has added "Titanic" beneath his signature. Lowe was the Fifth Officer on the Titanic and, after assisting in loading other boats, was assigned command of Lifeboat No. 14. We would fire shots as the boat was lowered to keep hooligans from forcing their way aboard. Also signed by JOSEPH BOXHALL (1884-1967), Fourth Officer. It was Boxhall who calculated the Titanic's position so that a distress signal could be sent out. He also sighted the masthead lights of a nearby vessel (possibly the SS Californian) and attempted in vain to signal it. Boxhall was put in charge of Lifeboat No. 2 with 18 persons aboard out of a possible 40. He rowed away from the ship for fear of being pulled down by suction. According to a COA accompanying the piece, this item was acquired directly from Lowe's brother in 1952 and was signed by Boxhall following the release of "A Night to Remember". Light soiling and some edge wear, else very good.
