Description:

(TITANIC) MARGARET "MOLLY" BROWN
(1867 - 1932) American socialite, philanthropist, and activist who became famous after the sinking of the RMS TITANIC, having exhorted the crew of Lifeboat No. 6 to return to look for survivors. It is unclear whether any survivors were found after Lifeboat No. 6 returned to search. She became known after her death as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". Very rare, early signed book from her library: "Good Morals and Gentle Manners", by Alex. M. Gow (Cincinnati: Wilson, Hinkle & Co.), 1873. Brown signs the top of the title page in pencil: "Margaret Brown Denver, Colorado". A particularly interesting piece in that Brown and her husband came from poor and simple immigrant Irish roots, and this book illustrates her efforts to improve her standing in society. From the holdings of noted Titanic collector and autograph dealer Brian Green who provides a letter from a fellow dealer and a letter from an associate of the Molly Brown House Museum who notes that the signature is commensurate with Brown's early signatures. Very good.
