Description:

THOMAS MCKEAN IS EULOGIZED
Fine content A.Ms. (unsigned), 8pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d. ca. certainly 1817], a eulogy of THOMAS MCKEAN (1735-1817), signer of the Declaration of Independence, member of the Continental Congress, and Governor of Pennsylvania. The document is written in the hand of an amanuensis, with many holograph additions in another, apparently elderly and as yet unidentified hand. The writer makes note of being occupied: '...every day in court, and also in Congress' and clearly was much involved in the fight for freedom. He was a contemporary of McKean, as well as Washington, Madison, and other Founding Fathers, as one may easily deduce from the content. It reads, in very small part: '...The venerable McKean has paid the debt of nature...he has descended to the tomb, 'full of years and full of honors'...he was one of the members, from Delaware. of the Stamp Act Congress...In this assembly of patriots, who laid the foundation of the liberties we now enjoy, he was and active...advocate of our violated rights...During the arduous & doubtful conflict, the firm purpose of his soul was never shaken...he was never depressed by defeat or disaster...his country was the sole object of his case...'. Letters from McKean to Washington, all with superb patriotic content, are also liberally quoted, including: '...I am determined never to give up the Independence of the United States, after so much expence of blood and treasure, whilst I have a breath to draw...'. Near fine, and absolutely worthy of full research.
