(THEODORE ROOSEVELT) RELIC OF QUENTIN ROOSEVELT'S WRECKED AIRCRAFT
QUENTIN ROOSEVELT (1897-1918) American Army aviator, a pursuit pilot during World War I. Extremely popular with his fellow pilots and known for being daring, he was killed in aerial combat over France on Bastille Day (July 14). His plane crashed almost upon the front lines, and Roosevelt's body was taken by the Germans and buried with full military honors. Rare relic of the young pilot's tragic death, an approx.. 5" x 2" section of blue cloth affixed to the top of a letter sent by one "J. F. Goebel" to"W. A. Myers", Feb. 7, 1919. Goebel writes: "…The attached piece of cloth is part of the aeroplane in which Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt fell to his death on July 14, 1918 in the battle of the Marne Salient. Sent by John H. Byrd Battery A, 148th Field Artillery A. E. Forces now stationed with army of occupation...". Very good. Set into a period frame.
