Description: THEODORE ROOSEVELT
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine content A.L.S. on both sides of his Sagamore Hill correspondence card, 8vo., Sept. 19, 1918, to Clarence H. Mackay, son of Comstock Lode founder and communications magnate J. W. Mackay. In full: "Dear Mackay, another imposition on your kindness! My sister, Mrs. [Corinne] Robinson, cabled the news of her husband's death to her son Captain Monroe Robinson, Co. B. 302 Ammunition Train, American Expeditionary Force, France. She has had no answer; the casualty lists are long delayed; she is anxious. Can you cable the message to him and ask for a reply? Hoping I am not trespassing too much on your friendship and courtesy I am always yours Theodore Roosevelt". Roosevelt had a very personal reason for wanting casualty notes: his soldier son, Quentin Roosevelt was shot-down from his plane just two months prior to this letter at the age of 20. Roosevelt's sister Corinne Robinson was a member of the Republican National Executive Council and the wife of Douglas Robinson, great-grandnephew of James Monroe. Fine condition.
