(1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Rare A.N.S. "Herzl" in blue pencil 1p. oblong 8vo., [Vienna], Nov. 11, 1903 to a Mr. Reich in German asking him if he can bring twenty Kronen to Mrs. Horowitz who lives on Turkenstrasse 9. On the verso an obviously elderly Helene Horowitz pens an illegible note dated Nov. 16, possibly a receipt or some sort of thanks for the money. File holes at right margin, usual folds and wrinkles, otherwise very good. EBAY 800
