Description:

THE112th NEW YORK NEARLY CHARGES THE REBELS
A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., in ink by Pvt. Theodore Skinner, 112th NY, Bermuda Hundred, Va., Aug. 22, 1864 concerning a near disaster in having to charge a well defended rebel position. In part: "...Last night we got orders to be ready with one days rations to march at a moments notice...about one o'clock at night...we fell in with the expectation of having a fight with the Johnnies. We marched as far as the Appomattox River and then we calculated to make an attack on their lines, but it was such a bad place to get to their lines that we did not make any attempt, there was a millpond to cross and we would have had to wade it and you know that would not have been a very pleasant job, and have the Johnnies on the other side popping at you all of the time. It seems as if the officers in command made queer calculations some times...there is no shooting on the picket lines at this front and it is a good plan too, for there is no use of picket popping at one another all of the time. Yesterday there was heavy firing in the direction of Petersburg nearly the whole day, I have not learnt what was the cause of the firing yet...". A few light foxed spots, very good.
