Description:

THE LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE AND FOREIGN LEGION VOLUNTEERS
Included is: a typed form to be used by those who sought to join the "Lafayette Flying Corps", 5pp. 4to., New York, May 16, 1917. The application was clearly intended to be placed in print by the Aero Club of America, and sets forth candidate requirements. Most interesting is the requirement for details on family background, to "disclose Teutonic strain"; a printed pamphlet: "Monument aux Volontaires Americains", Paris, 1923, 28pp. 8vo., setting forth comments by Raymond Poincare and dozens of others encouraging donations to the monument; and a 1927 printed memorial poem to the Lafayette Escadrille by Richard Le Gallienne. Very good. The Lafayette Flying Corps is a name given to the American volunteer pilots who flew for the French during World War I. It includes the pilots who flew with the bona fide Lafayette Escadrille squadron. The "Monument aux Voluntaires Americains" was dedicated on July 4, 1923 by President Raymond Poincaré to honor the 24 Americans who first volunteered to fight for the French in World War I in the ranks of the Foreign Legion and had died in that service.
