THE ‘CLEVELAND MORNING LEADER' REPORTS ON THE DEATH OF JOHN WILKES BOOTH
The newspaper the ‘Cleveland Morning Leader', 4pp., reports the death of President Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, two days after the event. In part: ‘...the murderer of the President has met his fate. Retributive justice, in his case, has been speedy as well as sure...There is a general feeling of regret that the murderer was shot down instead of being taken alive...Harrold, however, an accomplice of Booth's, is in our hands, and will be tried...Slavery, treason, rebellion, lay at the root of this most monstrous murder...'. The front page also offers copies of telegrams regarding the shooting of Booth, in part: ‘...J. Wilkes Booth and Harrold were chased from the swamp in St. Mary's County, MD., and were pursued, yesterday morning, to Garrett's Farm, near Port Royal...by Colonel Baker's forces. The barn in which they took refuge was fired. Booth, in making his escape, was shot through the head and killed, lingering about three hours, and Harrold was captured...E.M. Stanton...'. Content within includes more detail on the assassination of Lincoln and a memorial to the fallen president. Marginal tears, else very good.
