Description: THADDEUS S. C. LOWE
(1832-1913) American balloonist whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements, most notably at Fair Oaks where observations directed artillery and prevented a Union rout. Very rare war-date signature on a 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" slip taken from a document with his title "Aeronaut" added, signed as a member of the Union Army Balloon Corps, thus making the signature ca. 1861-1863. Mounted, very good.
