TEXAS PLANTATION SLAVE BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS
A comprehensive assortment of documents relating to antebellum slave records, likely from a Texas plantation. The documents range from 1848-1862, and list births and deaths of slaves, as well as the jobs assigned them. Lot includes three lists for 1848, each 1p., 4to. folio, and contain various names. One 1848 lot titled, "Negro List 1848 Spring" includes a notation: "55 Corn, 4 Wheat, 4 Tobacco". A list entitled, "Negro List 1848" lists 50 slaves and their ages, which range from infancy to 55 years. The list also includes several slaves who died: "Nancy, Rody's child dead, Fanny's child dead...". The list for 1856 is titled: "1856 ages of negroes at this date Oct. 9, 1856 so far as I can tell," and proceeds to list the names of 55 slaves and their ages. The oldest slaves, "June" and "Ralph" are 88, while the youngest, "Washington" is 2 years old. The majority of the names are ages 20-40. The document's verso contains the slaveholder's records of debits and credits, with various land holdings and sales, with a positive balance of "35 833.00". The 1858 document is a small memo book, 5.5" x 4", titled: "Robt W Bradley Memoranda Negro List 1858". The book contains ten pages of information on Bradley's slaves, also listing many birth dates, and dates of marriages and deaths. The list also includes deaths and marriages. The final item is a war-date, 7" x 4.5" bound ledger, titled: "Negro List". Bradley has made a notation on the first page: "A list of Negroes (corrected) made & recorded Jany 1, 1862". The ledger includes birth years and deaths. The items are in various states of condition, most good to very good, all with some nominal soiling and foxing.
