Description:

(1812 - 1873) Democratic Senator from Florida starting in 1851, and Secretary of the Navy for the Confederacy after the outbreak of the Civil War. Good association A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Washington D.C., February 5, 1852, to President Millard Fillmore regarding a recently retired Navy lieutenant. In part: '...The members of the Naval Committee of the Senate feel great sympathy for the situation of Mr. Richard W. Meade...they have directed me to express to you their earnest desire that he may be permitted to withdraw the resignation of his commission and retake his position in the service. Mr. Meade's resignation was prompted by no considerate which can touch the perfect propriety of his conduct as a good officer and honorable man; but it was dictated by deeply wounded pride under the real or supposed injuries inflicted upon him by a superior officer...' Lightly toned with scattered stains, else fine. Richard W. Meade II (1807-1870) U.S. Naval officer, was the older brother of Union Major General George G. Meade.
