STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS
(1813 - 1861) American politician who drafted the Kansas-Nebraska bill, most remembered for his memorable debates with Abraham Lincoln throughout Illinois. Manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Washington, May 31, 1854, a sight draft paying Douglas $2,000.00, boldly signed by him on verso. Light wear to edges, a bit toned at folds, otherwise very good condition. Offered together with John C. Breckinridge's 1860 running mate, JOSEPH LANE (1801 - 1881) A.D.S. 1p. 8vo., [Washington], Feb. 4, 1856 requesting the Sergeant at Arms of the House "...pay Hon. Albert Rust one hundred dollars and charge yr obt servt..." Fine condition. Together, two pieces.
