Description:

Fine grouping of seven late-war signed letters, 7pp. total 4to., Jan. 13 to Dec. 28, 1944, in which SS-Untersturmfuhrer Hans Weissenbock, a teacher of racial policy and a German Cross in Gold recipient, first condemns a colleague for revealing state secrets and is then himself accused of an unspecified crime. In a Jan. 13 letter to Weissenbock, a Baden Kreisleiter asks for 'a detailed characted appraisal of Dr. Wittlinger...Party Member Dressl [is] at my disposal for interrogating Wittlinger. You need not therefore be afraid of acting in an unfriendly manner if...you express an opinion of a colleague at the National Political Training Institute...' On Jan. 20, Weissenbock responds: '...I cannot hide the truth on the subject of his less excellent characteristics...There are also occasions where he does not remember that he has heard certain things under the seal of secrecy...if a colleague stands in his way, [he] knows no kind feelings - he just walks over everything in front of him...' On Jan. 24, the head of the Institute sends a circular warning all teachers that character reports should only be sent to him personally. Another letter by one 'Kressl' on Feb. 1st also mentions he had been asked to obtain a report on Wittlinger. On Sep. 12, it appears that the situation has changed as the Director of the National Agricultural Institute writes to the accuser, Weissenbock, mentioning: '...the unjustified reproaches which have been heaped on you...you have great success in the training of the rising generation of our National Socialist leaders, and are also a highly decorated front line soldier...the schemers are to be found in circles close to you...I imagine that this intrigue can be traced back ultimately to Dr. Wittlinger...you have my full backing...' A Dec.18, 1944 letter from the NSDAP Department of Petitions for Mercy, sent to Weissenbock, states that the matter raised in his letter to the SS would be dealt with by the Police Court of Justice. Finally, in a Dec. 29, 1944 letter from the same NSDAP department to 'Petitioner for Mercy" SS-Unterscharfuhrer Hans Weissenbock, the court judges the matter 'in suspense' for ten days pending receipt of a letter on Weissenbock's character, financial standing, 'relationship with the movement and rendering any kind of service', and if any other action had been taken. What ultimately became of the treacherous Weissenbock is unknown.
