Description:

SOLE REGIMENTAL COMMANDER KILLED BY HIS GENERAL OFFICER
EDGAR ALLEN KIMBALL (1822-1863) Union army officer, a lieutenant colonel who later commanded the 9th New York Vols. In April 1863, his superior, Gen. Michael Corcoran of the Irish Brigade attempted to pass through the 9th New York's area during operations in Virginia. When challenged by a sentry, Corcoran refused to provide a password. Kimball came to the sentry's aid, and Corcoran then shot and killed Kimball. Corcoran was not arrested nor charged with a crime, and he was never reprimanded. Very rare war-date D.S. as lieutenant colonel of the 9th N.Y. Vols., 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 29 [n.y.], to 'Capt. Pitkin', in pencil. In part: '...Please deliver my trunk to Sergeant Rourke or whoever is in charge of the wagon train from this Division...' Fine.
