SOLDIER GRIPES ABOUT "LOUSY" GERMANS AND IRISH
Civil War soldier letter written by Cpl. John S. Plank of the 59yh. N.Y. Vols., 4pp. 8vo. on patriotic letterhead, Camp Good Hope, Washington, Dec. 15, 1861 to a friend. In part: "...We are building a fort close to our camp...When we was in New York we had lots of fun but we can not run around like we did then. We are kept under a little more...Charles, you must tend to the girls about right while I am gone, you must pitch in and not stand back...I do not like the regiment very well for they are all Germans and Irish and cusses and lousy as the Devil. Got these big body lice we call them gray backs. I captured four of them...I send my best respects to all the ladies...". With transmittal envelope. First page soiled, else very good. Plank was later captured and paroled, and served for the entire war.
