Description:

SLAVE BILL OF SALE...FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.!
A most unusual slave bill of sale - one issued from our nation's capital, Washington, in 1849! The manuscript document is 1p. oblong 8vo., marked at top: "Washington D.C. August 9th 1849". Slave owner George T. Richards sells an unnamed "negroe girl" for the sum of $150 to E. H. Simmons, offers her with free and clear title, and warrants her: "...sound & Healthy both in Body and mind and slave for life...". Some old tape show-through in places, else very good. The first Washington, D.C. slave bill of sale we've ever encountered.
