Description:

Very rare artist's proof of William Marshall's engraving of George Washington - widely regarded as one of the finest engravings ever of our nation's first president. Beneath the engraving, Marshall signs in pencil, adding the caption: 'ARTIST'S PROOF'. Written along the base of the piece, in extremely fine print, is the notation: 'Entered according to the act of Congress in the year 1862 by William E. Marshall in the clerk's office of the United States for the Southern District of New York Copyright of photographs secured.' The image size is 13.5 x 11.25 in. on a 16 x 22 in. sheet, then applied to a 22 x 27.75 in. mount. Slightly rubbed at spots, else very fine condition. The original gravure belongs to the Library of Congress, yet according to Heritage Auctions, which sold a similar piece for over $1,500 in 2006: 'Research has shown that there might possibly be several 'artist proofs' signed by Marshall extant; however, the number is no more than a handful.'
