Description:

Good content printed pamphlet: 'Sermon of the Dangerous Classes in Society' by abolitionist and social reformer Theodore Parker, 48pp. 8vo., printed in Boston, ca. 1847, promoting prison reform, testifying that many criminals act of necessity, poverty, or societal issues. In part: 'by the present means, [we] can never remove the causes of crime nor much improve criminals...I would not torture a man for his misfortune...I would make him work for his own good and for the good of others...I would not clothe him with an infamous dress, crowd him with other men whom society had made infamous...I would not set him up as a show to the public...I would not load him with chains, nor tear his flesh with a whip...I would take the most gifted, the wisest and most benevolent, yes, the most Christian man in the state and set him to train up these poor savages...' Back cover absent, some staining and toning throughout, else very good. Content clearly legible. THEODORE PARKER (1810-1860) was an American transcendentalist and reforming minister of the Unitarian church. A reformer and abolitionist, his words and popular quotations would later inspire speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.
