Description:

Finely engraved wooden powder horn, 15 in. long with ornate brass work on each end, one side featuring assorted military scenes, including cannons, powder kegs, swords, spears, and various munitions, the other side reading 'Seringapatam 1799.' A small circular clasp attached to the top of the horn is still intact. A few small dents and cracks in the brass work around the mouthpiece, but otherwise fine condition. The Siege of Seringapatam (April 5, 1799 - May 4, 1799) was the final decisive battle of the Anglo-Mysore Wars, which was a series of four different conflicts between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company that was looking to expand its influence on the Indian subcontinent. It ended when British forces lead by Major General David Baird stormed the fortress citadel and killed Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore. The British Empire would then install a dynasty of rulers more friendly to the British Crown. British soldiers who fought during the battle were afterward given a special Seringapatam medal.
