Description:

Very rare set of three original Allied maps showing the Japanese defenses on Iwo Jima before the February 19, 1945 American landings, used on the scene, likely as a 'headquarters' map by an unknown officer. The three maps, each measuring approx. 21.5 x 17 in., are part of a three-sheet series showing the critical defense points throughout the entire island. The map is laid out in numbered and lettered grid squares so that any small area could be quickly located. Topographical lines show elevations, and roads, towns, cities, and major installations are also shown. The map is widely overprinted with red symbols showing every type of military offensive and defensive position and weapon, including trenches, rifle pits, coastal defense guns, block houses, machine gun emplacements, pill boxes, tank parks, artillery, mortar emplacements, barbed wire fortifications, anti-tank trenches, etc. One corner of each map bears the printed name of the island, the designation 'ENEMY INSTALLATION MAP', and a 'defense symbol key'. One sheet is marked 'SECRET', the other two have been trimmed but no doubt were marked the same. The publication line indicates that the map was produced from photographs taken on Feb. 10 to 11, 1945 - just over one week before the invasion had begun. Each piece also bears a printed diagram, showing Allied officers how the maps should be connected, and the large sections of adhesive staining towards the edges demonstrates that they were so previously combined to be used as a single map. Folds, adhesive staining as mentioned, else in fine condition. A truly desirable grouping, undoubtedly used in the planning and execution of the famous Iwo Jima invasion.
