Description:

SCOTTSBORO BOYS
Rare celluloid button, 2mm in diameter, imprinted: "THE NINE NEGRO SCOTTSBORO BOYS SHALL NOT DIE!….NEGRO & WHITE WORKERS UNITE!...SCOTTSBORO UNITED FRONT DEFENSE", manufactured in 1932 by the Eagle Regalia Co. for fundraising purposes and dispersed to supporters at mass rallies in protest of the infamous Scottsboro case. In 1931, nine Black youths in Scottsboro, Al. were falsely accused of raping two white women. After three trials, and being sentenced to death by all-white juries, international attention led to freedom for all nine, with one defendant waiting twenty years. The face of the button is in excellent condition, with no discoloration, chipping or scratching. The reverse has rusting on the rim and the manufacturer's paper label is lightly toned. From the estate of Leo Gallagher (1887-1963), known throughout his nearly 40-year practice as a defender of Labor unionists, political activists and the poor. He contributed his expertise and money as part of the defense team.
