673. WINFIELD SCOTT (1786-1866) Soldier and military tactician who gained prominence as a national hero during the War of 1812. He succeeded to the command of the U.S. Army in 1841 and was hailed as the greatest military leader of his time following his handling of the Mexican War. War-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., West Point, June 27, 1864 to Harper Bros. Scott mentions he has received a letter from a Harper's employee proposing to review his memoirs, and asks that the reviewer be thanked on his behalf. He adds: "...I intend to have nothing to do with the review of the book, I have no copy of it in hand or in proof sheets..." Some light toning, else very good. $200-300
