Lot 732
(PHILIP SCHUYLER) HUGH HUGHES, Deputy Quartermaster for New York State. Fine content war date A.L.S. 2pp. legal folio, "The Village ", August 9, 1777 to Maj. Nicholas Quakenbush, Assistant Deputy Quartermaster requesting supplies for General Israel Putnam's forces, and noting the departure of Philip Schuyler for Philadelphia to confront Congress in his growing feud over command and seniority that would ultimately place Horatio Gates in command of the Northern Army that would stop Burgoyne at Saratoga. He writes in most part: "...Inclos'd you have a Letter to the commanding officer of the Continental Army, at Albany, or its Neighbourhood, from General Putnam, requesting him to order all the Vessels that are now there, and coming down by Order of his Excellency, to be loaded with Boards & Planks &c letting the owners of them know that we shall pay them when in Cash. They are all to stop at Fishkill and unload, unless wanted here at the Time they arrive....If the Vessels hold be come away before this reaches you, let me know, and I will have them sent back as fast as they can be loaded...". Reflecting the uncertainty in command in the ongoing feud between Philip Schuyler and Horatio Gates over who had overall command of the Northern Army, Hughes writes: "...We don't know who will have the Command when this Reaches you as Gen. Schuyler &c &c. are ordered to Congress...". Schuyler had left for Philadelphia that very day to protest their dismissal of his director of Hospitals, Dr. Samuel Stringer without his consultation. Already unpopular with the New Englanders for what they perceived as his arrogance. He won that round, but the fall of Ticonderoga sealed his doom, and on August 4, 1777, Congress ordered Horatio Gates to relieve Schuyler. Hughes continues, advising Quakenbush to hasten to Albany and then complains about the latter's lack of communication: "Why did not write by the Express that I sent our Purpose to you?...". Weak at some folds, a few marginal chips, otherwise very good condition. $300-500
