Description:

SAMUEL WRAGG FERGUSON
Fine content war-date A.D.S. as Aide de Camp, 1p. 4to., Brook's Station, June 18, 1861, (three days before Fist Bull Run), a true retained copy of a letter from Brig. Gen. Theophilos H. Holmes commanding the Department of Fredericksburg to Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard. In part: "…Herewith enclosed you will please find a copy of a letter…answered by Genl. Lee, stating that the Enemy's plans were not yet sufficiently developed to justify the adoption of my suggestions and recommending if my force could be divided that I should erect a Battery at Marbias[?] point some thirty miles below here…how utterly out of the question it is for me to send a Regiment to your neighborhood …scarcely be sufficient to resist an effort by the Enemy to land with a view to invade…" Seal tear at upper-left, a small hole in the text affecting one word, still overall very good. Excellent content showing to some degree the disorganization of C.S.A. just before their lucky destruction of Union forces at Manassas.
