Description: SAMUEL P. LANGLEY
(1834 - 1906) American aviation pioneer who explored the possibility of flight by heavier-than-air machines and actually succeeded in inventing such a machine which flew over the Potomac for 3,000 feet. T.L.S. 2pp. 8vo. on Smithsonian Institution letterhead, Washington, May 21, 1899 to Mrs. Michaels noting receipt of "...Frank's letter and that of Professor Ames, and as I understand that it will be of service to Frank. I am willing to provide for his having the opportunity to attend to thes[e] examination papers on the stated days in June. My intervention, however, Mr. Ames will doubtless understand, will be chiefly formal...". Frank Michaels was Langley's godson over who he doted. Usual folds, else very good.
