SAMUEL F. B. MORSE
(1791 - 1872) American inventor credited with the invention of the telegraph, as well as a signaling alphabet known as the Morse Code. Fine content A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Poughkeepsie, Oct. 19, 1863, to his friend Samuel Colgate in New York City. Morse cordially confirms: "...Thank you for the Sewing Machine safely arrived. Enclosed you have my check for the price paid...M. Hodge & Charlotte are with us. All well and send love...". Receipt docketed on verso by Colgate. Morse's niece Charlotte Gebhard Morse and her husband Rev. John Aspinwall Hodge resided in Hartford. Light offset area at blank bottom margin, else very good.
