(SAM HOUSTON AND HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW, NANCY LEA)
(1793 - 1863) American soldier and politician, defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto and became first president of the Republic of Texas. Carte-de-visite image of Houston in a seated pose with cane in hand, backstamp by T. J. Merritt's National Portrait Gallery. Light wear with loss at albumen at upper right, corners rounded, two revenue stamps on verso, very good. Along with a carte-de-visite image purportedly of Houston's mother-in-law Nancy Lea, backstamp by Messrs. Brown, Irvine. Image lightly toned at edges and faded, overall good condition. Docketed on verso "Nancy Houston I think she was mother of Gen Sam". Two pieces.
