Description:

ROGER S. BALDWIN
(1793 - 1863) American lawyer, who defended the slaves in the Amistad case, later became governor of Connecticut and U.S. Senator. Early A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, New Haven, July 3, 1815, one year after being accepted to the bar, to his brother Ebenezer in Albany. Baldwin states that he has little news to report, except: "...the absence of a certain young lady, who has gone to spend the summer in New York, & whose movements...may not be entirely uninteresting to you...I am doubtless misspending my time and wasting my paper in telling you what you are already acquainted with...I always rest my faith implicitly on the public opinion...there is not much business doing in New Haven, or I get but a precious small share of it...". Folds, integral address leaf is torn and soiled, but the letter itself is very good.
