Description:

(1810 - 1885) Confederate Secretary of State and brigadier general who was instrumental in the founding of the Confederacy, his brigade held the stone bridge at Antietam. TOOMBS LAMENTS HIS LIFE GOING INTO HIS FINAL YEAR. Great content A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington [GA], December 3, 1884, to an unnamed recipient. In part: '...Your letter of the 20th has been duly received; I have withdrawn from all the active duties of life. I find Moses was a wise man. My experience vindicates his wisdom, [he] said 'The days of the years of a man's life are three score years and ten, & if by reason of strength then they be four score, yet their strength is weakness'...I quote memory in my 74th year and therefore do not vouch for the precise accuracy of the quotation...' Creased with light ink show through, else very good. Following the conclusion of the war, Toombs escaped to Europe to avoid arrest by federal authorities and did not return for two years. When he finally resettled in Georgia, he refused to request a pardon from the president, and went back into the practice of law before gradually regaining political power. The year 1883 was one marked by severe losses for Toombs when his beloved wife Julia, son in law Dudley M. Dubose, and close friend Alexander Stephens all died. He sank into depression, alcoholism, and ultimately suffered blindness before dying in December 1885 at the age of 75.
