ROBERT T. FREDERICK
(1907 - 1970) American major general, commanded the 1st Special Service Force, the 1st Allied Airborne Task Force, and the 45th Infantry Division. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Winston Churchill declared that Frederick was 'the greatest fighting general of all time' and 'if we had had a dozen more like him we would have smashed Hitler in 1942'. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Palo Alto, Sep. 21, 1968 responding to the writers request to set forth his most 'memorable moments' of the war. He lists them: '...The middle of the night invasion of Kiska Island...the capture of Monte la Difensa in Italy after scaling the cliffs in darkness...The Anzio, Italy campaign...The invasion of Southern France in the middle of the night...The battle for Aschaffenberg...The battle for Nuremberg..The capture and liberation of the inmates at Dachau...Being informed...that I would take the division I commanded...to the Pacific and make the assault landings on Honshu...That about covers the memorable events of World War II...'
